I have done a HD install of 2005.4 and configured my NIC (ipw2200) from the Kanotix Menu to use DHCP. The signal strength bars in KwifiManager turn green and my wireless router is detected, with very good strength. However, no ip is shown, and I cannot browse the 'net.
BTW, the 2006 version of Knoppix does not even detect my ipw2200.
Currently, I need to run WinXP to wirelessly connect. I want to use Linux for my browsing.

Do not allow WinXP to shutdow/poweroff the ipw2200. Because WinXP will remove this from the CMOS and adding this when XP starts.

When you boot Kanotix right after a shutdown from windows kanotix will never find this device. Same when you allow XP to poweroff the Lancard. or if you deakivate teh oundcard from within the bios.

To expand on what schnorrer said...
Make sure you tell XP to shutdown before trying to boot linux- hibernate is no good. When I hibernate and try to reboot into linux the wireless card doesn't work. When I shutdown and reboot to linux wireless works fine. I have an atheros wireless card, but I don't have any software 'switches' to power off the wireless card- just one hardware switch. Based on what schnorrer says, you should NOT use any software switches to turn off the wireless card. Make sure it's on when you power down.

The powredown for unused or idle devices is a: bios and b: driver dependent.
Setting for bios will be found at powermangement if the manufactoror has this option enabled.
Driver: windows does by default set this option on. (poweroff the device when not used) Not what's wanted.
Windows hibernate: the same as above.

And specialy new labtops has an extra button to disable W/Lan/modem. most of the time Linux will find this devices and activate them.

I can hibernate my WLAN connected WinXP session and immediately booted 2.6.14-kanotix-9 and as it finished loading, KWIFIManager turned green and I was connected.
However, Whenever I try to boot my upgraded 2.6.17 version, I cannot connect. I see a firmware error for ipw2200, but I do not recognize a driver for it in the download.

It also works with Ubuntu 2.6.15kernel

Please look at acerhk (already included in kanotix, but it needs custom configurations) or other rf kill switch related topics for your notebook.
