ok...I tried so far (for nearly a month now to get away without bothering you for a help...I am running Kanotix and I AM VERY HAPPY FOR IT!!!!BIG THANK YOU...Here's my actual specification:

Zitat:
Host/Kernel/OS "tamihania" running Linux 2.6.15.6-kanotix-1 i686 [ KANOTIX 2006 CeBIT ]
CPU Info mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ 512 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 1459.700 MHz ]
Videocard S3 VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] X.Org 6.9.0 [ 1024x768 @75hz ]
Network cards VIA VT6102 [Rhine-II], at port: e300
RaLink Wireless PCI Adpator RT2400 / RT2460
Processes 89 | Uptime 23min | Memory 214.527/217.277MB | HDD ST93015A Size 30GB (52%used) | Client Shell wrapper | Infobash v2.50rc10

I tried today to update the kernel from 2.6.15.6 to 2.6.16.2 using Kanotix-Update-Gui and everything went fine and "dandy" despite my wireless card configuration...IT'S not working on new kernel...I am booting to the old one now - to be able to write the message!

My questions are:

1. What am I to do to make the card working on new kernel? (The new one is not even "recognizing" that wireless0 exist - I checked iwconfig...)
2. If it's not possible to change - how can I remove the new kernel?
3. I tried to dist-upgrade today (just to take a look what it will show me!) and here is the result:

Code:
root@tamihania:/home/tami# apt-get -s dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  ndiswrapper-modules-2.6.16.2-kanotix-1: Depends: ndiswrapper-utils (>= 1.13-0) but 1.8-1 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

How can I safely upgrade than?

I am sorry for all those stupid questions from a real noob... Verlegen I really try just to follow the forum's threads, wiki and manual - but I am tired now... Can anybody help an old woman who tries really very hard to escape from Window$ turning humans to "point and clicking" monkeys....?

I will be very grateful for any help written for a real noob Weinen

tami

Use this:

http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/ ... urrent.zip

rm -rf kernel
unzip kernel-kanotix-current.zip -d kernel
cd kernel
dpkg -i ndiswrapper*deb

Thank you very much for trying to help me Kano...I feel very obliged...I followed all the instructions - downloaded file and did the rest in the console - but still no wireless0 on the new kernel.
It doesn't recognize the wireless0. Only lan0 which definitely will not work. I do not know what to do. Anyway thank you!

Because you don't need ndiswrapper, you need rt2400*deb .

I had the same problem with my RT2500 adapter when using the 2.6.16 kernel. Many have shared this problem. It works now with 2.6.17-kanotix-1, so I recommend you upgrade to the newer kernel and try again.

This is exactly my issue too. Here is my setup:
Code:
Host/Kernel/OS  "Kanotix" running Linux 2.6.15.6-kanotix-1 i686 [ KANOTIX 2006 Easter ]
CPU Info        Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 512 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 1594.138 MHz ]
Videocard       nVidia NV11 [GeForce2 Go]  X.Org 7.0.0  [ 1024x768 @60hz ]
Network cards   Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+, at port: 2000
Processes 92 | Uptime 1:01 | Memory 406.039/755.418MB | HDD WDC WD600VE-00HDT0 Size 60GB (38%used) | GLX Renderer GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2 | GLX Version 1.5.6 NVIDIA 87.62 | Client Shell wrapper | Infobash v2.50rc12

as you can see above, infobash does not detect any wireless card at all BUT i do have wireless (802.11b). i think the wireless is integrated, but i'm not sure - in any case, the wireless works fine with 2.6.15.6 kernel but not at all with anything newer. what can i do to get a new kernel to support the wireless chip?

I had the same problem when I upgraded my Kernel to 2.6.17

Then I thought "Do I Need A Kernel Upgrade?" I could not think of a reason why I needed one.

I just removed it as getting the wireless card going was beyond my level of ability. I did some searching on the forum but could only find German postings and I'm not that good at German, only Dutch.

@jiro, I think you need to run "infobash v2" while running your old Kernel so it lists your wireless card.

My config is-

Code:
Host/Kernel/OS  "max11max" running Linux 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1 i686 [ KANOTIX 2006 Easter  ]
CPU Info        (1) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 3200.458 MHz ]
                (2) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 3200.458 MHz ]
Videocard       nVidia Unknown device 01df  X.Org 7.0.22  [ 1280x1024 @75hz ]
Network cards   Atheros AR5212 802.11abg NIC
nVidia MCP04 Ethernet Controller, at port: fc00
Processes 107 | Uptime 48min | Memory 434.773/2026.1MB | HDD ATA ST3160023AS,ATA HDT722525DLA380 Size 410GB (6%used) | GLX Renderer GeForce 7300 GS/PCI/SSE2 | GLX Version 2.0.2 NVIDIA 87.62 | Client Shell | Infobash v2.50rc12

But if I ran infobash in Kernel 2.6.17 I got no wireless detection.

what I posted above ARE the results of infobash v2 while running my 2.6.15.6 kernel. infobash fails to detect any wireless card (probably because it is an integrated chip on the motherboard (?), not a separate card). although infobash does not detect a wireless card, my wireless works just fine using that kernel.

and here is another clue, maybe: my wireless also works fine using the liveCD, including RC4 with whatever kernel that includes. but if i install RC4 (or RC2), then my wireless does not function.

That's mad,

I guess lspci don't show anything wifi related.

Have you managed to get any program to identify the unit after upgrading ?

no, last time i tried was maybe a month ago. then whatever programs i tried (iwconfig, lspci, netcardconfig, etc.) failed to identify my wireless chip. maybe i'll try upgrading the kernel yet again "for fun" just to confirm this absurd situation. truth is, i don't know any reason that i actually need a new kernel, except for the idea of having the "latest and greatest"...
