Problems with umlauts (a special character in german)

On fat32? partitions, which were created by Windoof, files can contain umlauts, which cannot be picked out by Knoppix derivatives.

it can get surprising when the files are created with "touch äöü" put in. It must probably be because of the kind of coding done by Windoof.

Several of us, who could not so far say good-bye completely to Windoof, have therefore the problem that a backup under Knoppix(Kanotix, etc..) for instance is not entirely possible because file names containing umlaut cannot be accessed.

In the forum there is a thread on this here: ..

This problem emerges in 5 different Knoppix variants I tried out and in one older Debian 2.1 system.

It has probably nothing to do with UDF but with the way vfat treats it. Anybody who knows something more on this, like how to solve this problem, can contribute here and in the forum to an answer..

Thank you
