Software - System Freezing!

Titel: System Freezing!
Hello folks,

recently my 2005-04 system (running the 2.6.16 kernel) has started to 'freeze' for no reason. By freeze, I mean that the screen responds to neither the keyboard or mouse, or the placing of a CD in the drive etc. I have been able to soft-reset to correct the problem, but now that doesn't seem to do the trick.

I have been dist-upgrading daily for the last few weeks without any problems. In fact the only issue that I have seen recently is a crash error on shutdown from kwallettmanager.

I am considering removing all of my data and doing a complete re-install, but if anyone has a better idea, then I'd appreciate it!

Run some diagnostics first, including temperature tests.

May want to try running off the live CD for awhile.

Also, if you have some USB devices, try plugging into different ports

Check the logs in /var/log and dmesg

remove or better don't use kwallet.

I had problems with smp-enabled kernels. Perhaps try a uniprocessor kernel?

The same thing just happened when running from the live CD

If it's happening on the livecd it's a hardware issue, as people are suggesting.

try running a hard drive test utility, and run memtest, which is an advanced option in grub.

If it passes both of these tests, then your mobo or cpu might be dying. Or your power supply might be dying, it's hard to pinpoint it.

remove ksynaptics

I dusted first - it was quite a state!

CPU now running 10 degrees cooler, so I'll try that first.

Thanks for the other suggestions - I have noted them in case of further problems.

Yep, me too, sounds exactly the same just freezes but I can ssh in and kill it but the CPU is running overtime ...

Gowater,

What CPU do you have?
I have an Athlon 64 mobile 3000+

By one more time reading the posts, could also be a timing problem with ram, and caching. Some of the AMD-64 has a small bug with one status-register inside the CPU. Evrey time the CPU has used a lot of FPU with timesatmping, the freeze can occure.

I self got such a CPU. Normal integer calc's does not freeze, but some progs, using this Reg.(flag TC changed) do Freeze. Especialy when timestamping is needed. Kwallet, some Network or debug tools need this Register.

May be the corrected Kwallet does not need this or the older one.
