Software - VLC: New skin and settings

Titel: VLC: New skin and settings
Hi.
I did a apt-get update and a apt-get upgrade.
The version is 2005-04 and I am using a DELL laptop.

After reboot, VLC has got a Macintosh-like skin in brushed steel.
The problem is... How do I get to VLC's settings? Everything is just... brushed steel. No File menu or anything!

I would like to stop using a skin, like back in the old days (yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away)

Oh. And one more thing:
APT doesen't work. This is what happens:
Zitat:
root@cochlea:/home/kerrigan# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
E: Unable to parse package file /etc/apt/preferences (1)
root@cochlea:/home/kerrigan#

Thanks for your help Smilie

Here's the problem:
I start VLC with a konsole, and get the following output when it starts:
kerrigan@cochlea:~$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.4 Janus
[00000264] main dialogs provider error: no dialogs provider module matched "any"
[00000261] skins2 interface error: No suitable dialogs provider found (hint: compile the wxWidgets plugin, and make sure it is loaded properly)
[00000261] skins2 interface: skin: VLC OSX Interface author: BigBen

If I press the Preferences button in the VLC skin, this messaage comes in the konsole.

[00000284] main dialogs provider error: no dialogs provider module matched "any"
[00000261] skins2 interface error: No suitable dialogs provider found (hint: compile the wxWidgets plugin, and make sure it is loaded properly)

So. How do I fix it?

Eww I can sympathize - that OSX skin is hideous! I use wxvlc. You might try apt-getting that. If you can't find the settings meny try right clicking on the top of the VLC window.

I think you just need to add an empty line at the botom of /etc/apt/preferences.

if your not not sure how to add extra line manually
do this in console as root (sux and password)

wget -O/etc/apt/preferences http://kanotix.com/files/fix/preferences

Thanks a lot for help whit that APT problem.
But how do I solve the skin problem?
What I really want is the old skin back.

The Preferences menu cannot load bechause of this skin disorder. I just don't want to use skins. A second option is to keep that Mac skin, but I have to get the menus working then.

But I prefer to get rid of it.

stryder - 02.09.2006, 01:58 Uhr

ctrl-S opens up the preferences panel. Perhaps that might work for you. In the interface option, open up the main interface option and you can deselect the skinnable interface.

BTW, I have vlc 0.8.5.debian-2 installed from the debian unstable repository. You might want to just apt-get remove --purge vlc and then install it after an apt-get update.

Jackiebrown is merely telling you that you don't need wxvlc. Or to answer your question, nothing. Have you tried what I suggested and install a new vlc from unstable after purging the original one? And if you want, there is a folder called .vlc in your home. You should find settings there.

Worked beautifully! Thanks a lot! No more Macintosh skin. Just the same old VLC that i love so much. I'm gonna watch The Corpse Bride now. Great movie Smilie

Oh. By the way.
One last un-related thing:
When I do an apt-get update, I get this message:

What do I do about it? I can't see it does any harm, bechause everything works fine. But doing another apt-get update does not remove the message. It's just something I deal with on all my Kanotix-computers.

This is the computer you have been helping: http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/coelacanth-pc/

Since you like Corpse Bride I can see why you consider that computer a "thing of beauty". Sehr glücklich Well done! It's amazing what you can use to house a computer. I have seen pictures of one done in a bread box!

As for the public key thing, check out this thread:

http://kanotix.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... public+key

The solution is to:

apt-get install kanotix-keyrings

It's a debian thing, not a kanotix thing.

I was saying something

Anyways just delete the .vlc folder to reset your settings

Purging a file during a remove will not effect any changes you made to the file if the configs are in your home. That is nonsense. I see it recommended over and over.
piper - 02.09.2006, 19:48 Uhr
Titel:
The remove command only removes the actual package files, but leaves the .deb compressed package file intact. This means that you can re-install the package later without going through the compile process again. If you need the disk space, you can remove the .deb

Purging removes the configuration files so that the next time you install the package you get the "default" configuration.
jackiebrown - 02.09.2006, 20:05 Uhr
Titel:
but that relates to the configs in /etc and others that the package installed.

Debian policy prohibits removing a package - with or without the purge option - to effect the files in your home director.

Try it, use firefox for example, fixes it all the time, atleast for me it does

you will get a warning

then try with "apt-get remove --purge vim"

gone Winken

I do understand with home, just delete

Jackiebrown sorry you misunderstood me. The man asked "what is wxvlc good for?" So I said, to answer your question, nothing.

I recommended installing vlc again because he has an earlier version of vlc and i felt that installing the latest one might clear his problems. These problems did not come out of fiddling with config but after update/upgrade.
