| Just been to the knoppix games forum, linked by some poster here and it's amazing how quite a few people there are having alot of trouble installing nvidia drivers. You'd think they'd have an equivalent to Kano's scripts. |

Swynndla,
For the kids huh??? try "jump n bump" - do an apt-cache search for exact package name... its fun, cute, can be "de-violent" 'ed for the lil ones... You even get a good many of "background" environments to play in...
You play the role of a rabbit, you have to "jump" on top of your opponent to get points, they, in turn, get "killed" and come back to the game after a few seconds... and the game continues... Not too graphics intensive, as far as I know, and is a fun game
Hope this helps, |

Warsow a fast paced FPS.. 3D Engine based on Qfusion (a modification of Quake 2 GPL engine). It launches fine on my Debian Sid box. The graphics were a bit fuzzy on my Nvidia 5600XT card but cleared up within a few seconds. The game seems to play fine although I did not spend much time trying to figure it out. You know you're getting old when the instruction manual is in English but not one word of it means anything. |

I found another network game to try to beat the kids with === "njam".
It's a pacman-type game where you can join up with others to help you eat the dots. Works great. |

Swynndla,
Had to scroll through the complete thread, to check, I thought I had suggested that one, and I guess I never did...
But, yes, that one is a good one, even for the adults... Since you can create your own game sets, it can be very fun, or easy, or whatever, depending on what you make in the game sets. This one is addicting
Good Suggestion |

If you like racing games: tuxcart, supertuxcart, slune and torcs are great.
monsterz is simliar to bejeweled and very addciting.
A fun network game to play is Battle for Wesnoth.
Younger kids like childsplay, gcompris, tuxpaint, potato guy, tuxmath and tuxtyping.
Games are one of the best things about Debian linux, I must have over 150 different games installed. |

Well you can judge these flight sims for yourself.
X-plane http://www.x-plane.com/
Flightgear http://www.flightgear.org/
YSflight http://www.flightsimhq.org/ysflight/
GL-117 http://www.heptargon.de/
Palomino http://www.palomino3d.org/
You can get some of these through apt.
apt-get install xsabre gl-117 flightgear
I personally love Flightgear but it's not really a game. There are no weapons on the aircraft and there are no explosions when you crash. Instead Flightgear is aimed at those wishing to learn to fly and the models in Flightgear have characteristics very closely matching the real aircraft (so I'm told).
Not free but a very excellent flight sim if you like gliders:
http://www.silentwings.no/
I've read that it's possible to get some of the M$ flight sims to work under WINE but I'm in no position to make any recommendations. |

| I was going to install Americas Army, but then I thought "do I really want closed-source software made by the United States Government on my computer?", and so I'm not going to try that game thanks! |

since 2006-rc4, foobillard doesn't work anymore:
Code:
load_png: rgstereo=0
setting up wood frame bumpmaps
applying wood frame bumpmaps
enabling depth test
.... w=128,h=128
5-0
.... w=128,h=128
5-1
.... w=128,h=128
5-2
.... w=128,h=128
5-3
.... w=128,h=128
5-4
.... w=128,h=128
5-5
another error code means that the font file could not e opened or read, or simply that it is broken
for that i purged and reinstalled it - nothing changed.
does anyone know whats up there?

Works fine here. Seems you have a font problem. Do you have ttf-freefont installed? It should have been brought in by foobillard. Perhaps a reinstall of ttf-freefont? |

I'm having "system rebooting" kind a problems when starting some of the games.
I've installed SearchAndRescue and Boson but when I start the games, screen goes blank then I'm back at the login prompt.
I'm not sure how to debug this so can't really put any error o/p but I'll really appreciate if I can get some help on how to fix this problem!
I don't think it has anything to do with my system specs, its a brand new comp with latest cards and gadegs and since any latest games plays fine on my win partition.
Still, for reference, I have
P4/3ghz hd , 1gb ddr2 ram , pci-x nvidia 6600 128mb video card
using kanotix 2006 rc4 with latest kernel and updates! |

mzilikazi,
ttf-freefont is already installed (up to date). tried to reinstall it with purging it first but that didnt work:
Code:
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von ttf-freefont (--purge):
Unterprozess pre-removal script gab den Fehlerwert 1 zurück
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
ttf-freefont
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
so, no changes here
foobillard is my favorite game.. maybe other suggestions?
thanks! |

Found a pretty good site with some native Linux games - you can get free trials or buy the full version.
http://www.mygamecompany.com
I thought this was interesting:
Quote:
Dirk Dashing features:
* No blood, no gore, no fist-fights, no gratuitous violence of any kind - Dirk uses knockout gas grenades to put his enemies to sleep, and other non-lethal means to defeat them!

Has anyone looked at emulators, the snes one called zsnes is actually quite good. I've so far gotten final fantasy, chrono trigger, legend of zelda, super mario world, mario kart, street fighter 2, mortal kombat 3, sensible soccer. It's insanely good |
