My internet connection here at university works one day, but not the next. It's been doing this all week. I use a static IP and other settings. Haven't changed the settings at all. Connection always works with windows- same IP, netmask, gateway, DNS. Using Kanotix to connect at home to a router by DHCP is just fine. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on?
Additional info that may be useful: the link light isn't coming on under linux, but does for windows. I am running Easter RC4, w/ dist-upgrade, using dbus/testing. I tried the several live CDs, with the same result. Ethernet card is realtek 8139 in my laptop and is detected as such according to lspci. KDE shows that the connection is up by the icon in the tray, but there is nothing being transferred. I can't even ping the DNS server, or other PC's plugged into the same hub. |

| Does it work when you shut down the computer before you run Kanotix, instead of just rebooting the computer? There have been incidents where Windows didn't properly unload the NIC's firmware before rebooting into Linux. |

| You are right! I shut down windows instead of hibernating and then linux networking is just fine. Thanks so much for sharing that piece of trivia. Where did you ever learn it? Thanks so much. |

You're welcome. Several forum members reported a similar issue a few months ago, and I just thought you could have run into the same problem. |

God, for a rtl8139 there is no special FW. Problem is Wake on Lan /wake-on PWR hibernate does function until MS allowed to powerdown the RTL8139.
