You could give 64 Studio a try.
It is basically Debian Etch, but it is easier to install, it has nicer defaults with more apps, but most important a 2.6.21 kernel out of the box.

It's always a good idea to try something new, but users might as well help Kano by testing Kanotix-2007-01-RC5 ("Thorhammer"). It's Debian etch too, and more experienced users can install Kernel 2.6.22-9 from Kano's repo.

I agree, but I wish the link could be found here somewhere (I am very IRC-shy Smilie )

Hm, that's not going to get you very far. If there ever was a reason to use IRC, it's Thorhammer. Just log in with your nickname "Daniele" and ask for the download link. After installation you should do a dist-upgrade (don't worry, nothing's going to break), install Kernel 2.6.22-9 from http://www.kanotix.com/files/kernel/ and report any problems you might encounter.

Thanks, I believe I'll do it.
And BTW, I liked this poem very much:

And the likely reasons why you posted that Smilie

I am one of the few who refused to move to Sidux.

Thorhammer looks very nice on this old compaq laptop (k6-2 433) and runs reasonably well in spite of the slow cpu and only 192 M. Just installed today...Thanks to Kano for the link to it. Now to upgrade! (and nobody bit me on IRC!)

Not knowing about Thorhammer, I took 2006-Easter off this machine and tried Etch Xfce, DSL, Puppy, AntiX and none really worked well. 2007-rc5 looks and runs better than any others I tried. The native 586 support seems to do it for this processor.

So I tried to ask for the download link at IRC.
It was one of the most embarassing situations in my life Verlegen
I had zero previous experience with IRC. Kano kept telling me: "click on Kano", which I did, but for some reason it didn't work.
I'll wait for a public RC, unless somebody wants to kindly send the link by PM.

It seems you use noscript plugin and disabled scripts, then this does not work. I told it twice to you.

Yes I know you did. Besides I had to leave because I was late for some important commitments. Thanks anyway.

Daniele, the first time I asked, I was lost as well.

Hi Danielle ( and everyone). Have you downloaded and installed Thorhammer yet? I did on Friday night and it is not difficult. Kano has set it up so that when you ask for the link and he gives it to you, you use the wget program witn the -N option to download, and then type !overburn into the IRC main channel to see instructions on how to get it to fit on one cd. Then, you can ask how to download the acrotixinstaller and run the hd install. I am writing this from Thorhammer now and so far it has no issues that I can see on my Dell P111 desktop.
Good luck with it, and don't be IRC shy, we are all learning here.
Cheers from Guelph, Ontario Canada.'Sehr glücklich'

Thanks freshmeadow, very kind of you Smilie Somebody sent me the link. I burnt Thorhammer to DVD.
I didn't have any problems either with the installer or with usage.
