          | I suppopse this is a question for Kano or slh.
Have any of the Kanotix kernels been patched for the
VIA VT8251 chipset so that SATA drives may be used
 with motherboards containing this chipset?

          | I don't think this is a trivial backport, we'll contain support for that sata chipset when the stable kernel.org kernel does. There are no kernel hackers on the payroll here |

          | This depends on a newer libata version, which won't be merged until 2.6.18 (in ~4-8 weeks), due to the shear number and intrusiveness of rdepends it won't be patched by us earlier than in mainline. This doesn't mean we won't start to release experimental kernel 2.6.18 snapshots as soon as they become usable, but those won't "magically" enter an ISO image nor are recommended for general use cases. |

          | Many thanks slh.
I only asked because I've shown a couple of my Windows friends
my Kanotix setup and somewhat presumptiously convinced them
to try a Live Kanotix (Easter) CD. Both were delighted and wanted
to do an install but as they each have mobos with this chipset
 they can't.

At least I can now inform my friends of the sort of time scale
they can expect before they can install Kanotix. Luckily both are
understanding people and I'm sure they will not be put off by the
 wait.

 Thanks again.

ps. You can now ignore my post in the Software section of the
 forum.
