Why does every linux distrobution have a section of "screenshots?"
Most use KDE or GNOME. One can go to the .org and see the screenshots straight from the GUI vendor.
That is great about Kanotix, no big button showing "screenshots."
There's 100's of linux distrobution sites showing the same icons on the desktop. Would not be so bad if there was something innovative about the particular distro and GUI.
A "why our distro is better than x (or XP)" would be a better replacement button.
Well that's my rant.
Thank again to the whole Kanotix team...Great distro. I left XP for Kanotix, and haven't looked back. (Although I do admit, my wifes PC is still XP, and I use it for some apps.) |

I think the screenshots do alot more than just showing the same things. For new users that have never used KDE or Gnome, they can see what the desktop looks like. Some know nothing of linux and are just referred to the website by a friend. For more experienced users, it allows them to show their customized desktops that helps to give ideas to others one changing their own desktops. With KDE alone you can change it quite a bit by customizing and adding with programs such as SuperKaramba, etc. People pop in the irc all the time and ask how to get their desktop to look like someone's screenshot. I think it is a good section to help people to dive in to customizing their desktop. Well, that's my opion of it
Cheers,
Mike |

From our menu on the left we link to an external fan-based gallery, where you can see the very different faces Kanotix can have: http://galerie.kanotix.de/.

My personal favorites are the "Ubuntu Retarded Release Name Number 6000 Screenshot Tour".
It's the same ugly desktop every stinking time! |

Mike,
It would be fine if the screenshots were of uniquely customized desktops, but most are just the general screenshot of KDE, GNOME, etc. (I know there are others, great in there owness, and no less important, but it is these two seen most often on desktop distro's). If one were to surf to distrowatch.com and look at 100 desktop distro's, I would venture 90% of them show the same or similar pic. Maybe they show the distro's mascot, but otherwise a similar desktop to others. |

Well, maybe not the usual "my dog, my girlfriend, my screenshot" type would be the real thing, though "The piranha penguin massacre" or "KDE winding in compiz torture" would be nice.
But: screenshots con tutorials might be interesting for people looking for live Linuxes like Kanotix. I am thinking of something like: how to use Kanotix in internet cafés or how to use a flexible /home on a USB stick. Maybe there is place on the servers for a "screenshot-wiki". Never saw something like that anywhere. Well: the tutorial how to install Kanotix is quite close to that

| I've seen your stuff cathbard, it is great. I don't mind GOOD, uniquely customized screenshots. My personal favorite is the pinguin, the butterfly, and the flyswatter. |

Thanks. I was just fooling with you (and it was a weak excuse to show off my beryl theme ) That was what you call power-spamming. Screenshot spam in a theme about too many screenshots .. I just couldn't resist. Maybe I have an odd sense of humour. |
