The last Matrox card completely supported by FOSS (and included into upstream XFree86 4.3, X.org) drivers was the g400 series, g450 and g5xx need a binary hal for 3d "acceleration", even worse for parhelia based cards which don't work with X.org 7.1 at all (VESA only).
As paradox as it might sound, ATi r200 and r300 based cards (radeon <= 9xxx) have probably the best opensource support (2d and basic 3d acceleration) - although r300 isn't that mature yet and can't really compete with ATi's windows drivers regarding performance. |
