I got one of these from ebay because it has an external antenna interface, but i have not been able to get it to work, not even with the Huawei dashboard software for Linux that I found (can post link if anyone wants it).
Reports on the net are mixed, some say this particular modem does not work at all, others claim they have it working or have found a fix --without providing any useful info that I have found though.
Any one here tried to set up this one in Kanotix?
The deviced is recognized in lsusb, I have tried to add producer/vendor info in udev/modeswitch files. wvdial tries to connect but stops with 'modem not responding' - the same setup works with E220 (the best modem for linux).
the huawei software also finds the modem but fails to connect. this software also works with E220. |

Do you have got bpo active? there is a newer version available:
apt-get install -t squeeze-backports usb-modeswitch
or try the latest trial image. |

I did try the Sakis3g software, it only works for 3g devices though. It seems to be able to switch the modem but connection with wvdial still fails and it does not come up in Networkmanager as it should if successfully switched. It does work in windows but that's not what I want.. |

Well how about trying a newer usb-modeswitch version, you can forget win software on linux for that purpose. |

Thanks didn't see your first post. Will try newer version. win software? haven't tried that, there actually is a Linux version of the default Huawei software, I forget the name. something to try in emergencies
and apart from this Kanotix runs so smoothly I forget about the whole OS. does rival the all-time 'best' linux:
Libranet 2.8.1 |

Didn't work. As expected: I did try Ubuntu 11.10 which has a 3.0 kernel and for sure the latest modeswitch and also mandriva 2011 on a spare HD.
In ubuntu the device caused a kernel crash, in mandriva nothing -its possible installation of packages was required but i could not be bothered. In mandriva the E220 did not work either.
Device works fine in windows so nothing wrong with it but it seems this particular modem simply does not work in linux. No matter, it cost only 20 euro and i can get some of that back by selling it on.
I can get a PCI card with an antenna like those on pci wifi cards from China for $70, this could then be used with my yagi antenna. i only need this when in the country where i have long distance to sender and only get Edge signal
This new version of modeswitch is different, instead of dumping all config files in etc/usb_modeswitch.d it puts them in usr/share in an archive and apparently unpacks on demand. with this device nothing got unpacked, device was not recognized
I went back to the debian stable version: after 'upgrade' my Huawei E220 stopped working too (not sure why, that basically always works).
the umtsmon version in Kanotix got quite far it seemed but stopped with this error message from ppp:
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyUSB1
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Terminating on signal 15
Modem hangup
wvdial did not work because it was set to ttyUSB0 (this works for E220) not 1. after correcting this it started complaining about invalid init strings instead..
case closed, not worth the time. |
