Hello,
Trying to upgrade my old box with 2.6.18 kernel from 2006. Ran thru "apt-get install upgrade". Everything went fine except at the very end with error message of:
----------
Preparing to replace locales 2.7-13 (using .../locales_2.19-7_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement locales ...
dpkg-deb: file `/var/cache/apt/archives/locales_2.19-7_all.deb' contains ununderstood data member data.tar.xz , giving up
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault.
----------
Searched the net & found suggestion to "upgrade" dpkg. Current dpkg version is 1.13.22 (i386). Running "apt-get instal dpkg" will failed with about the same error message as above.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem. Is dpkg the problem?
Thanks,
Bill |

Your install is 8 years old. Do you think you can update it cleanly? You could get spitfire (lastest) or dragonfire (older) 32 bit, lxde variant for that box. Should work fine and to install office, visit irc and do what the bot has stored for !lo . Its not really a highend box with an old monitor...

Better to do a CLEAN install considering how old your install is. Back up ALL your data first and make a note of the applications installed then boot from the live cd and wipe the partition(s) clean. |
