there is a lot of action in Kanotix-country!
Did an update install of RC1 to RC 2 - no problem. Automounting of CD ok, tab for keyboard layout in K-controlcenter ok
In order to install my HPLaserjet 1100 - parallel printer - I had to do the "apt-get --purge remove cupsys etc " procedure. After that printing ok
Changing the destdir for VDR-recording - I had problems previously, but possibly my fault - without any problems now.

As far as I am concerned Kano and crew could use the RC2 as final with the possible exception that installing the printer may be difficult for people not familiar with the forum....does, in my hands, not work straight away with the relevant gui.

It is really fun to use KANOTIX and learn more about linux every day (and night)

just ran rc2 in vmware :

GRUB Errors:
trying to select a resoltuion in grub causes grub to hang!
language and splash selection works fine. though, opnening the language and splash menu several times causes the VM to crash:
Code:
*** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) ***
The virtual machine just suffered a stack fault in kernel mode. On a real computer, this would amount to a reset of the processor. It can be caused by an incorrect configuration of the virtual machine, a bug in the operating system, or a problem in the VMware Workstation software. Press OK to reboot virtual machine or Cancel to shut it down.

KDE:
Fonts: are still "not best" (not ugly, but not good enough). my settings that give me crystal clear fonts in KDE is "sub pixeling: RGB" and "hinting-style: full". rc2 settings are sub-pixeling disabled and hinting medium.
Trash-Can: there's a trash on the desktop, so i don't need another trash on the lower right on my screen. it makes kanotix look like kubuntu Verrückt

Installation:
Speedy 8:19 minutes (ISO in a VM). No Problems. GParted works perfectly.
Splashy: splashy turns black after half the boot process. the percentage bar returns quickly, but the background picture stays black. but this is also an issue on my easter rc4 dist-upgraded desktop installation and not in particular an issue with the rc2 live cd.
Everything else i tested worked (couldn't test printer installation though).

The sub pixel are different for TFTs depending on construction. So when I set it to one setting, then 50% of the others will complain.

i see, then it's ok. maybe this should be mentioned somewhere, if it isn't yet.
will the help file that's loaded on kde startup be translated into other languages too? or will it stay english only?

Hello!

I installed 2006-01-RC1 and then 'apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade' to RC2:

Code:
Host/Kernel/OS  "Test6Box" running Linux 2.6.17.13-kanotix-2 i686 [ KANOTIX 2006-01 ]
CPU Info        AMD Sempron 2800+ 256 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 1552.889 MHz ]
Videocard       S3 86c764/765 [Trio32/64/64V+]  X.Org 7.0.0  [ 1024x768 @75hz ]
Network cards   Digital Equipment DECchip 21140 [FasterNet], at port: ec00
Processes 81 | Uptime 7min | Memory 213.816/376.172MB | HDD CntxCorpHD,CntxCorpHD Size 17GB (11%used) | Client Shell wrapper | Infobash v2.50rc16

It is still not possible to set additional keyboard layouts (slovenian in my case) - I can only switch between [us], [de] and [fr]. Traurig BTW, this works in Easter Edition of Kanotix

Thanks, Roman

doknir,
you cannot dist-upgrade to RC2.
you must get the iso or the xdelta-patch from RC1 to RC2 and do update-install from the installer.
if you dont want that, rm -rf /etc/X11/xkb will fix the kbd-layout bug.

As a live CD RC2 cycles at GRUB 1.5. The MD5sum is correct and I burned the downloaded iso at 12X. On the same computer RC1 booted OK as a live CD. I use GAG as a bootloader for my installed OSes.

Don't know if it's a bug but my toshiba laptop with a ati x700 mobility card, worked ok with 2005-04 using ati xorg driver but now gives no image when it starts running kde. Is there any way to solve this problem?

@fuzzybud, pdjm: Just to make sure, boot with cheat code "testcd". x700 shouldn't be a problem.

It seems that several ATI cards have problems with xorg 7.0, hopefully xorg 7.1 will be soon in sid, so currently use

xmodule=vesa

override and install fgrlx driver after hd install.

ockham23, GRUB doesn't load that far to let me enter "testcd". The last I see on the screen before it cycles is GRUB 1.5. After that the computer shuts down, in old terms a warm boot, I see the BIOS splash screen, and then GRUB again, endlessly repeating until I remove the CDROM.

Edited: I tried again to boot RC2 as a live CD. The very last message I see on the screen is, Grub loading.... Please wait. Then it powers down and comes up again. I am using an EPIA 5000 cpu and VIA chipset with 512 MB of RAM. This little computer has been in constant use for five months and booted everything I have thrown at it. This the first time to have GRUB recycle like this.

ockham23, my second computer is identical to my primary computer. I could try it to see if something has failed on the first one. Since writing the previous message I burned the RC2 iso to another blank disk. I got exactly the same result. It recycled right after the message, Grubloading, Please wait. I will try to load it on my second computer and get back to you.

Edited: I tried to boot RC2 on the twin computer. It behaved exactly the same way. The other day I booted RC1 without a problem. I will try again with RC3. Thanks ockham23, a good name, by the way. Ockham deserves to be better known.

fuzzybud, you're the first one to recognize the name. Anyway, maybe this will do the trick: Copy KANOTIX-2006-01-RC2.iso to the root directory of a partition, e.g. C:/KANOTIX-2006-01-RC1.iso. Then boot your computer off the RC1 LiveCD and append cheat code "fromiso=K*2.iso" to the line of boot commands.

ockham23, thanks for your effort. I don't want to install Kanotix until the release. Presently I am using PC-BSD because it and other versions of FreeBSD connect to the Internet normally and all versions of Linux I've tested take 5 to 10 minutes to connect except for versions of Linux one year old. I get a normal connect with with Mepis 3.3.1 and Knoppix 3.4. I have asked for help on other forums without luck. I guest I will have to solve it myself in time. I had hoped maybe this version of Kanotix would connect normally. I'll try again with RC3.

fuzzybud, I bet this is a Via Rhine network adapter. Via Rhine is known to cause IRQ problems on some computers. Try booting with cheat codes "noapic" or "pci=routeirq". It could also help if you detach some unneeded devices such as USB cameras to free up some interrupts. Installing an "-up" kernel might also help.

Thanks for the pointer. I booted RC1 on my second computer using noapic. It still took about five minutes to connect to the Internet but at least you gave me something to investigate. Later I will dig in my junk box to look for a network card. Yes, the motherboard has a Via Rhine network adapter. I didn't know of that possible reason for my problem. This is the third forum I asked for help and you are the first one to offer something solid to investigate. Thanks again.

Bugs that I noticed:

The "ToRAM" boot option in grub has no effect. It works fine in Knoppix 5.01.

The text color for the functions keys (i.e. "F1") in the grub screen makes the text almost totally unreadable. (i.e. You can't see the "F1", "F2")

When you right click on a partition on the desktop such as a NTFS partition, there's no option to change it from read-only to writeable. What's wrong with the way that Knoppix does it? Is ntfs-3g the default way used to mount NTFS partitions? It wasn't clear to me. I would prefer if NTFS volumes are mounted RO by default, but easily switchable to writeable.

I couldn't boot off my 2nd DVD burner. It started booting and made it past the 2 penguin icons (representing each core of the processor), but then when the boot process gets to the part where it searches the devices for a CD/DVD devices, it couldn't find any. Seems kind of ironic that it was already booting off the DVD drive, but then couldn't find the DVD drive that it was booting off of. I think Knoppix has the same problem, but not all distros do.

Maybe it's the spelling; try "toram" instead. If "toram" doesn't work, the next logical step would be to run memtest from the grub menu, then reboot with cheat code "testcd".

Open file "index.html" on the cd and click on "How to use ntfs-3g with Kanotix" to get more information.

@devil: That's similar to what fuzzybud wrote. Maybe it's the same problem, and AlienX doesn't even get a grub boot screen.
@AlienX: Please specify your hardware. Can you test the cd with another computer?
